Second graders at Greater Plains Elementary School brought history and pop culture to life during their annual Wax Museum event, held on the mornings of February 10 and 11. Hosted by teachers Mrs. Jamie Gabriel and Mrs. Kari Ruff-Rivera, this much-anticipated tradition showcased the creativity, enthusiasm, and hard work of students as they embodied famous and historical figures from around the world.
Families, classmates, and staff were invited to step into the classrooms-turned-museum, where they encountered a diverse lineup of influential figures spanning politics, exploration, invention, literature, sports, music, and entertainment. Representing world leaders and historical figures were President Donald Trump, Melania Trump, Queen Elizabeth II, and George Washington. The explorers and pioneers included Amelia Earhart, Sally Ride, and Pocahontas, while famous thinkers and creators such as Albert Einstein, Walt Disney, Dr. Seuss, and Frida Kahlo were also in attendance.
Sports were well represented with Jackie Robinson, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Tom Brady, LeBron James, Alex Morgan, Mia Hamm, Gabby Douglas, Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Misty Copeland, Katie Ledecky, and Michelle Wie. In entertainment and music, guests met Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Zendaya, and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, all brought to life by the students' impressive performances.
Dressed in costumes and equipped with props, each student stood at their desk, ready to share well-researched facts about their chosen person. With confidence and enthusiasm, they recited their speeches—often from memory—before asking visitors the exciting question: "Who am I?" Guests eagerly played along, guessing the identities of these living statues and engaging in a fun, interactive learning experience.
The Wax Museum is a cherished tradition at Greater Plains, offering students an opportunity to develop research skills, build confidence in public speaking, and gain a deeper appreciation for influential figures who have shaped the world. These young Yellowjackets put on an incredible performance, and their hard work and dedication were on full display. We couldn’t be prouder of them!
