Feb 24, OHS Student Names National Merit Finalist

Oneonta High School senior Wyndam Withington has been named a National Merit Finalist, a distinction awarded to the nation’s highest-achieving students based on their performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Wyndam is among the top one percent of high school seniors across the country to earn this honor, placing him in the running for prestigious National Merit Scholarships to be awarded later this spring.

To become a finalist, students must demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, and commitment to extracurricular activities while earning outstanding scores on the SAT or ACT. Wyndam’s dedication to both academics and the arts has made him a standout student at OHS. A passionate performer, he is an active member of the OHS Drama Club and has also been deeply involved in the local community theater scene. Most recently, he took center stage as the Scarecrow in OHS’s fall production of The Wizard of Oz, showcasing his remarkable talent and commitment to the arts.

In a small recognition ceremony held at Oneonta High School, Wyndam was presented with a Certificate of Merit in honor of his accomplishment. In attendance were his parents, Superintendent Thomas Brindley, and Principal Kevin Stevens. During the presentation, Mr. Stevens shared remarks highlighting Wyndam’s achievement and the significance of this recognition.

"The National Merit Scholarship Program represents some of the brightest and most dedicated students across the country, and Wyndam has truly earned this honor through his hard work and passion," said Mr. Stevens. "We are incredibly proud of him and excited to see what the future holds."

From an initial pool of over 1.3 million students nationwide, more than 16,000 were named Semifinalists, with only 15,000 advancing to Finalist status. Wyndam now has the opportunity to compete for National Merit Scholarships, including college-sponsored and corporate-sponsored awards, which will be announced between April and July.

Congratulations to Wyndam Withington on this outstanding accomplishment!
