On Friday, March 14, the Oneonta City School District held a Conference Day with a special emphasis on staff wellness, centered around the theme Refresh, Recharge & Reconnect. The day, thoughtfully designed by Assistant Superintendent Coleen Moore, reflected the district’s continued commitment to supporting educators through relevant, engaging, and purposeful professional development.
The morning featured two impactful keynote sessions led by nationally recognized speaker Dr. Stephen “Dr. Bird” Birchak. Known for his engaging style and focus on positive psychology, Dr. Bird encouraged educators to embrace resilience, foster joy, and bring intentional optimism to their daily lives—both inside and outside the classroom.
In the afternoon, staff chose from a wide variety of breakout sessions that supported personal growth, wellness, and collaboration. Offerings included fitness and movement classes, creative workshops, and sessions focused on stress management, financial wellness, retirement planning, and caregiver support. Opportunities to plan with colleagues and explore new ideas in a relaxed setting added to the spirit of connection and renewal.
Throughout the day, there was a noticeable sense of engagement and enthusiasm. From the conversations in hallways to the energy in the sessions, it was clear that many staff members found value in the experience and genuinely enjoyed the opportunity to learn, connect, and focus on their own well-being. The day reflected the district’s belief that supporting staff in meaningful ways ultimately strengthens the entire school community.
